The first confirmed case of locally transmitted paratyphoid fever in Taiwan this year has been reported; pay attention to food hygiene and hand hygiene!!

The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced today (June 9) that Taiwan has reported its first locally acquired case of paratyphoid fever this year (2026).
The first confirmed case of local paratyphoid fever in Taiwan this year (2026) is a man in his 50s from northern Taiwan. He had no history of domestic or international travel during the incubation period. He developed symptoms such as fever, headache, and body aches in late May.
After seeking medical attention and testing, he was diagnosed with paratyphoid fever. The patient has now recovered and returned home to recuperate.
A family member living with him and seven workplace contacts all had no suspected symptoms. Stool samples were collected and sent for testing, and all results were negative.
Health authorities have initiated relevant prevention and control measures, conducting a detailed investigation into the patient’s exposure history, including food, and educating contacts on health monitoring and ensuring proper food and hand hygiene. They are also supervising the implementation of workplace hygiene management.
According to data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study,
there were approximately 1.72 million cases of paratyphoid fever globally in 2023, with about 10,000 deaths. The epidemic showed a declining trend year by year.
Geographical distribution exhibits significant regional clustering, mainly concentrated in areas with relatively weak health infrastructure.
For example, Southeast Asia had the highest number of cases, particularly concentrated in India (approximately 1.3 million cases, accounting for 75% of the global total), followed by the Eastern Mediterranean, Western Pacific, and Africa, with Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal also having high numbers of cases.
Developed countries face the risk of imported cases, such as South Korea and Japan, which are frequently visited by Taiwanese citizens, and still occasionally have sporadic cases each year.
CDC explains that Typhoid fever is a Class II notifiable infectious disease,
an intestinal infection caused by Salmonella Typhi bacteria. It is primarily transmitted through the consumption of food or water contaminated with the feces or urine of infected individuals or carriers.
The incubation period is usually 1 to 10 days, and the infectious period lasts 1 to 2 weeks, and common symptoms include persistent fever, headache, malaise, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, relative bradycardia, and a rash on the trunk. The CDC urges the public to pay attention to food hygiene and handwashing.
Drinking water should be boiled or bottled. Food must be thoroughly cooked before consumption, and cross-contamination between raw and cooked foods should be avoided during preparation and cooking; In addition, implement good personal hygiene habits.
You should clean your hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating, after using the toilet, before handling food, or after changing diapers to effectively prevent infection.
CDC reminds that if any suspected symptoms occur, seek medical treatment ASAP and inform the dietary history; if
