疾管署（以下、CDC）は本日（16日）、世界の新型コロナウイルス感染症の陽性率は高水準にあり、東南アジアや日本、韓国などのアジア太平洋諸国で陽性率が上昇し、米国や日本、タイ、スペイン、イタリアなどのような一部国家では症例数も増加している。世界保健機関（WHO）のデータによると、昨年（2023年）12月には新規感染者数110万人、死者数1万人近くに達し、昨年の11月と比較すると、入院者数と重症者数がそれぞれ42％、62％と増加しており、COVID-19の感染拡大が拡大していることをさまざまなデータが示しており、WHOは、新年期間中の人の集中やJN.1などの変異株の影響を踏まえ、今年（2024年）1月も各指標が上昇し続けるだろうと評価していると発表した。
