Two critically ill patients with novel coronavirus pneumonia suffered sudden major bleeding. The Western Hospital of Union Medical College Hospital, the Support Wuhan Medical Team and local experts worked together in a multidisciplinary effort to treat them. With one patient carrying an ECMO and another patient with a ventilator, the team of experts walked on the rope to complete the rescue operation. On the 24th, the vital signs of the two patients recovered smoothly.

Two critically ill patients had sudden major bleeding on the same day. On March 13, Mr. Chen, 64, was transferred to the ICU of the Western Union and received ECMO treatment for nearly 20 days. Although critically ill, the vital signs remained relatively stable for the time being under full treatment. But late at night on the 21st, his abdomen suddenly had a major unexplained hemorrhage. The amount of bleeding exceeded 3000 ml, which was more than 60% of the total blood volume of an adult.

Another patient who was anxious for his life was Mr. Liang, 69, who has been on the ventilator for 39 days. On the evening of the 21st, a large amount of dark red bloody stools appeared, indicating a major bleeding in the digestive tract, and the bleeding volume also exceeded 3000 ml. Until the early morning of the 22nd, continued rescue could not stop bleeding at all.

9 people escorted a patient to the examination room

On the morning of the 22nd, Guangdong supported the ICU medical team leader of Wuhan Union Medical College and Professor Zhang Noofu, the deputy director of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University, and submitted an emergency multidisciplinary consultation to the dean of Union Medical College. Subsequently, experts from the Gastrointestinal Surgery, Anesthesiology, Gastroenterology, and Radiology Department of Union Medical College West came to meet with the medical team experts to accurately diagnose and treat patients.

Experts agreed that the bleeding site must be found as soon as possible to stop bleeding. However, critically ill patients have a very high risk of going out for inspection and transfer. Any alarm or malfunction of the ventilator and ECMO on the way might threaten the patient’s life. But if we do not fight, the patient will eventually die from hemorrhagic shock. The soldiers in white decided to fight hard.
According to the outing route usually planned, the patient has to go through a bumpy road, and the risk is serious for the critically ill patient who is on the ECMO or the ventilator and is full of tubes. Thinking everything is done for the
